School Health Quality Audit Toolkit
A comprehensive approach to school
health is one of the most effective ways to influence students’
health behaviours. The School Health Quality Audit will help you
achieve this by identifying low cost, high value improvements
which are needed in the areas of physical activity, physical
education, nutrition, smoking prevention, asthma, unintentional
injury, and bullying prevention at your school.
By investing in the School Health Quality Audit you will be
taking an important step towards improving your school’s health
promotion policies and practices. There is growing recognition
of the relationship between health and academic performance.
Promoting healthy and safe behaviours at your school is a
simple, yet effective way to increase students’ capacity to
learn, reduce absences, and Improve physical fitness and mental
alertness.
Big Results Don’t Have To Cost Big
$
Many of the improvements you will want to make after completing
the Quality Assessment can be done with existing staff and with
few or no new resources. For those priority areas that may
require new resources, your Quality Audit results can help
provide information needed to stimulate school board or generate
community support for school health, and help to establish
justification to support funding requests.
A small investment in time to complete the School Health Quality
Audit can pay big dividends in improving students’ well-being,
readiness to learn, and prospects for a healthy life!

How the School Health Quality Audit Works
The health and safety habits of students are influenced by the
entire school environment. The Quality Audit has eight different
self-assessment modules. They can be completed by yourself or
for a more in-depth review, they can be completed by a team
consisting of representatives from different groups within your
school (including parents, teachers, students, administrators,
other staff members, and concerned community members).
Module 1: School Health and Safety Policies
Module 2:
Health Education
Module 3:
Physical
Education
Module 4:
Nutrition Services
Module 5:
School Health Services
Module 6:
School Counselling Services
Module 7: Health and Promotion for Staff
Module 8:
Family and Community Involvement
Choosing to involve
people other than yourself in the self-assessment process will take
a bit more time but allows members of your school community to come
together and discuss what your school is currently doing, and what
it could be doing to promote good health.
A ‘Facilitator Delivery Package’ is available as an optional
addition to the toolkit. It has been specifically designed to assist
you in introducing the School Health Quality Audit to other staff
members. It includes all the materials you require to conduct a 30
minute, half day, and full day professional development sessions
(including presenter and participant notes, and PowerPoint
presentations).
Responses to the items in the audit are scored to help you identify
your school’s strengths and weaknesses. After you complete the
self-assessment process, the School Health Quality Audit will help
you identify important actions that your school can consider to
improve its performance in areas that received low scores.
There is also a reference tool included to help you prioritise the
various recommendations. This tool will help you select a handful of
actions that can be implemented this year. The Quality Audit comes
with a School Health Improvement Plan to guide your steps in
planning the implementation of the recommended actions. The School
Health Quality Audit also includes a Planning for Improvement
section to help your school develop an action plan for improving
student health.
